This skill is remarkably important but it is commonly taken for granted unless the child has a pervasive developmental disorder like autism that overtly interferes with his ability to communicate.

No matter what level of functioning a child has it is important to introduce the various elements of communication to his everyday learning. Part of social skills lessons revolves around the ability to process the ways others communicate. For example, the child learns to actively listen and watch the person talking.

Communication isn’t just about words. There are subtle ways that we communicate to one another that can be addressed in social skills lessons. Body language is very important not only as a way to “read” others but as a way of communicating to others. A person who has a habit of folding his arms may seem aggressive or closed to others. 

The lack of good communication skills and the ability to interact with one’s peers can be detrimental to a child’s development. It is important to recognize that social skills lessons are not just for appropriate behavior. Not all children who are well behaved are socially secure.

I was a painfully shy child who could have benefited from social skills lessons when I was little. By the time that I truly began to understand the ins and outs of social interaction, I was graduating from college. I hate to think of all of the opportunities for life-long friendships I lost to shyness. 

A child who is able to navigate well through social situations will fair better in school and with peers. In order to assure that your child receives the best when it comes to interacting with others it is a good idea to introduce him to social skills lessons relatively early in his development.
