There is a lot of hand wringing about the fact that people download essays
online all the time. Downloading essays, if you would believe the experts, is
going to single-handedly ruin the academic system. Already, there may be
thousands of kids who are getting credit for essays that they did not write
themselves, while other more qualified students are languishing with poor or
second rate grades. In reality, however, the fault does not lie exclusively with
the essay writing services. If the teachers showed more variety in the types of
essay questions that they wrote, it would be much harder for people to cheat.

The fact is that almost any essay question you
download online is from a limited number of essay topics. Most high schools look
at the same books, ask the same essay questions, and have students write
substantially the same papers. In some ways, there is a reason for this. You
see, there are certain basic skills that writing essays teach you, such as media
literacy, reading comprehension, and of course, basic writing. One of the
reasons that there are so many essay questions that are more or less the same is
that there are certain tried-and-true methods of teaching these basic skills.
Another reason is that there are certain classic books that every student should
read.
Even so, if teachers were to use a little bit more variety in assigning essay
questions, I think it would cut down on cheating in two ways. The most obvious
is that it would be harder to download essays off of the Internet. Have you ever
been to any of these essay download sites? You should try it is an experiment
sometime. Check it out and you will see that almost every essay question that
you have ever been asked in high school is available for download on these
sites. It isn't like they get a hold of every student's essays and sell them on
the Internet. It simply is easy for them, because most of those essay questions
are asked in every school in America. If they were not , you could not download
relevant essay questions.
Even more importantly, if the students were more engaged by more novel and
interesting essay questions, I think they would be less tempted to cheat. It
isn't that students are dishonest or lazy, but that they are often not
challenged enough by the schools. Essay questions should be relevant to their
daily lives.
